001_GE_03
A titanium vase manufactured in collaboration with GE Additive that embodies the novel material, manufacturing, and VR technology used to create it.
GE Additive’s Electron Beam Melting machines are incredible in the field of additive manufacturing. Working much like SLS resin printers, they sinter metal powder in layers to create precise 3D parts with virtually limitless geometric possibilities. In collaboration with my studio, Section 001, GE Additive opened up their manufacturing to me to create novel aesthetic applications for the technology.
To highlight the geometric complexity possible with this technology, I turned to 3D scanning and Virtual Reality sculpting programs.
To mirror the natural complexity of the plants that would fill my vase, I 3D scanned plants, creating CAD files to import into Virtual Reality. These 3D files were then used as brushes with which to sculpt forms in the VR programs.
So, 001_GE_03 is as complex as the flowers that fill it, with a materiality that speaks to the preciousness of the material, as well as the manufacturing that allows it to take form.
See the section 001 project below for more information on this collaborative studio.
