A sculpture created for an exhibition with the Work is Play artist collective that nods to, and pokes fun at, the contradictions of entropy.

“one must distinguish between mechanically obtained randomness and the visual representation of randomness as a type of order. Since mechanically obtained randomness contains all kinds of possible permutations, including the most regular ones, it cannot be relied upon always to exhibit a pervasive irregularity.”

This piece is a nod to Rudolf Arnheim, committed to creating a more perfect disorder than any representation that precedes it. In the same breath as the quote above, Arnheim asserts that “disorder is not the absence of order.” It is “the contrast of opposing orders.”

Inspired by the self-contradiction of selecting for randomness, I created a list of my own opposing orders to use (and break) ((and use at the same time, thus breaking both.))

1. Form will be defined by mechanical randomness of foam.
2. Foam is limited by deliberate netting enclosure.
3. Materials will be bought in a 10 minute browse at Blick.
4. Materials will be salvaged from what I already own.
5. Amorphous, opaque, textural
6. Poured, hewn, shiny
5. Mold is platonic.
7. Object is not.
7. All paint tubes will be carefully hand selected.
8. All colors mixed (or not) without intent.
9. The appearance of randomness.
